Commencing Monday December 2nd 2019 the Local Court at Darwin will be trialling a new case-management system for domestic and personal violence matters.
Purpose and objective
The purpose of this new case-management practice is to better triage and fast track domestic violence matters through the Local Court. The practice will also result in judges having more time to spend on the matters that require the most attention and are the most complex.
The other objective is to tie Local Court’s Family Law Pilot into the management of the domestic violence lists.
The Family Law Pilot, which is funded by the Federal Attorney-General’s Department, will be expanded into the domestic violence jurisdiction. Under the expanded pilot the judicial registrar will manage the domestic violence list to identify matters where the domestic violence order being sought would be inconsistent with a family law order. When appropriate the judicial registrar would help make orders to revive, vary, discharge or suspend an existing family law order. The judicial registrar would also aid in the managing information sharing between the Local Court and the Family Law Courts.
